Introduction to Music Entrepreneurship

Written by: Angelea Hengle

One of the biggest questions that artists face when breaking into the industry is “how can I market my music?” While artists can have a team that helps them realize their vision and guide them in the right direction, it is just as important to look internally and be your advocate.

This can be accomplished through music entrepreneurship. Music entrepreneurship is best summed up in two words: artist empowerment (Powerful Intro to Being…). It is about understanding what speaks to you artistically, building the confidence to ask for what you want, and advocating for yourself.

Innovations in Music Entrepreneurship

Knowing where to start can be daunting, but there are plenty of resources that can help launch your music career. Two innovative platforms for musicians to look out for in 2022 would be Intercept Music and Koji.

Intercept Music

The first thing that pops up on the Intercept Music’s website in bold letters is “Independence Empowered”. Intercept Music genuinely embodies the meaning of music entrepreneurship and the importance of artist empowerment. This platform helps artists gain a better sense of social media marketing, music distribution, merch sales, and marketing services.

When it comes to payout, “Intercept rewards artists and labels monthly revenue payments - and provides access to royalty earnings in real time with no hidden fees and 100% artist-maintained ownership.” In addition, this platform lets the artist distribute to 230+ countries and to 80+ major services.

These services can be obtained by creating an Artist Account by purchasing the package that includes the Intercept Music Flex Artist Plan for $50.00 and a one-time set-up fee for new members at $100.00 for a total of $150.00.

Koji

For a free option, look to Koji, an online platform that can help artists reach new audiences and promote their work through three easy steps: 1. Set up your profile 2. Add mini-apps and 3. Add your Koji link to your bio. First, let’s look at the mini-apps suggested by Koji. Koji provides a multitude of apps in the following categories: monetization apps, e-commerce apps, Web3 apps, embedded media experience apps, and others that are essential for the Koji user.

Koji works similarly to LinkTree but is tailored to meet musicians' needs to grow their platform and increase monetization.

We hope this gives you a bit of independence and sets you off on your musical journey!
